There was a need for an EV charging solution in this commercial property, as the the tenants of the space wanted to provide electric vehicle charging for their employees. However, they needed to find a practical solution in a commercial setting, without overloading an already limited electrical supply or undertaking costly renovations.

Challenge

The commercial space is powered by a single electric meter connected to a 45 kVA transformer—a typical setup in a commercial setting, where the electrical supply is sized to meet the building’s needs rather than to support large-scale charging. The real challenge was to add nine EV charging stations to the outdoor commercial parking lot without compromising the capacity of the 125-amp distribution panel or requiring an overly costly upgrade to the electrical service.

Solution

An SMP+ (model SMP-21) was installed to power the charging stations:

  • Provides dynamic energy management by monitoring the power consumption of the panel and the 9 charging stations connected to it in real time
  • Allows for the installation of charging stations from different brands
  • Protects the entire existing electrical infrastructure without requiring replacement or upgrades to the electrical connection
  • Enables a clean and safe installation, suitable for a commercial setting where space and budget are limited
  • Offers the ability to connect up to 21 charging stations, leaving room for future stations without major modifications should charging needs increase
