Case Study

The Chestnut

The DCC-12s installed in this San Francisco condominium gave residents access to electric vehicle charging stations. The installation, completed in 2024, was masterfully carried out by the EVCharge4U team.

Challenge

Powering an electric vehicle charging infrastructure for all indoor parking spaces in a multi-unit building where the electric meters are located in the garage basement (accessible). The HOA was looking for a solution without recurring fees.

Solution

As the electricity meters are accessible from the parking spaces, the DCC charge controller solution was chosen. However, since the electrical room was too small for the DCCs to be installed there, and the inspectors refused to have them installed in the corridor at the back of the electrical room, they were eventually installed directly in the parking spaces. The CT wires were extended using 600-volt-rated shielded communication cables, ensuring a safe and compliant installation.

  • Installation of 8 DCC-12, each with a subpanel with a protection of 60A and a 40A breaker

In the San Francisco Bay Area, electrical inspections often require that breakers be easily accessible, which is why the DCC-12 and subpanel solution was chosen.

“Our work frequently begins with a condo owner or tenant looking to install an EV charger at their deeded parking spot. In most cases, the building’s electrical capacity is limited, and the HOA or management is unwilling to fund a shared EV charger.

For 99% of these situations, RVE DCC products are the ideal solution—not just for apartments and condos but even for single-family homes with limited power availability.

The biggest advantage? With RVE DCC products, the homeowner has just one bill with the utility company, without any hidden fees or the need to rely on a third-party Charge Point Operator (CPO). It’s a cost-effective and straightforward solution tailored for modern, EV-friendly living.

[The approach to this project] exemplifies how, when paired with strategic planning, RVE products can overcome even the most challenging space limitations in urban environments.”
