Optimizing At Home EV Charging in California with the DCC-12: A San Jose Resident’s Story

With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), the need for efficient home charging solutions has become paramount. Like many others, Doug Peterson from San Jose, California, chose home charging for all the advantages it provides. Overcoming electrical panel limitations and financial challenges

Living sustainably in South San Jose, California, Doug Peterson and his wife, Laura Karst, embarked on a journey to reduce their carbon footprint. One significant step was the purchase of a Hyundai Ioniq in 2020, coupled with the installation of a home charger. However, their endeavor encountered unforeseen challenges due to electrical panel limitations; their 100-amp main breaker couldn’t accommodate the additional load. 

The necessary upgrades to the panel would have been complex and expensive, with estimates exceeding $10,000, accompanied by engineering fees and structural changes in their 30-year-old home. However, Doug continued to look for an effective solution that would avoid these costly expenses.

Exploring alternative charging methods

Encountering these challenges, Doug delved into alternative charging approaches, resorting to trickle-charging the car from a standard 120-volt outlet. Although functional, this makeshift solution proved suboptimal, demanding constant vigilance and disrupting household routines.

A potential middle ground surfaced with the suggestion of a toggle switch, alternating power between the car charger and an electric oven. The switch would be placed between a 50-amp circuit breaker and the electric oven it currently powers.  

While not perfect, it presented a more budget-friendly option compared to extensive electrical renovations. However, it introduced its own limitations; they could toggle the circuit to supply the car charger or the oven, but both could not operate at the same time.

Introducing the DCC-12: A game-changing device

After months of having to charge their electric vehicle at home with the 120-volt outlet, Doug decided to seek out estimates for a toggle switch. 

“One local company, Willow Glen Electric, told me about a new device that could solve the problem without the toggle. They explained how a load shedding device functions and assured me that they had already installed a lot of them for other EV owners encountering similar roadblocks.”

The solution presented to Doug was the DCC-12, also called Demand Charge Controller. Patented as an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS) and designed to address energy capacity limitations, the DCC-12 enables direct connection of a charger to an electrical panel, circumventing constraints that would otherwise hinder installation.

In their pursuit of a more efficient solution, Doug and Laura switched from a budget exceeding $10,000 to an innovative solution of approximately $2,000 that facilitated and optimized the charging of their new Ioniq at home. And thanks to the federal tax credit in place covering up to 30% of the installation cost, they were able to save even more money.
