Get EV charging for your single-family home with the BC Hydro rebate

Are you ready for electric vehicle charging at home? 

Good news! There is a $200 rebate for single-family home customers of BC Hydro who are looking to add a charging station to their home.

The DCC-9 and DCC-12 by RVE both qualify and can help if there’s concern over having enough energy capacity to support adding electric vehicle charging to an electrical panel.

Determining your Eligibility for the BC Hydro rebate

First things first, what would make a resident of BC eligible?

Be a BC Hydro customer in a detached home, row home, duplex, or mobile home
Live in a property that was built more than six months prior to charging station project installation
Have installed an EV power management device from this list
Have installed a Level 2 EV charger from this list
Have had your electrician be approved for an electrical permit
Have had the installation take place on or after December 1st, 2023.

How do you know that you need a power management device?

Read this article for the full details on different types of power management devices or charge controllers (and the advantage of using a DCC). But in short, power management is needed when there is not enough capacity on a panel leftover for charging an electric vehicle (EV). 

This can happen because your panel size might be a bit too small (100 amp) and/or your EV charging station might require 40 amps of power or more (which can be half of your panel’s capacity!). It can also be that having many electronics and electrical appliances at home can put you near capacity (which happens more often in our digital world).

Truly, the solution is a power management device because the alternative, which is upgrading an electrical panel, can mean up to five figure costs ($10,000 or more) when it involves requesting an electrical service upgrade from your utility (and sometimes a utility might not have enough grid capacity for this either!). 

Think of a power management device like an EV charging station’s other half: one that can bring additional savings, required safety, and a better charging experience.

Now that you’re set on a power management device and charging station, what’s next?

Most rebate programs require completing the work before applying for the rebate funding and so your first step will be to collect all of the invoices and receipts relating to the project. The BC Hydro website has criteria for multiple scenarios but because we encourage electrical work to be completed by a licensed electrician, the guidance here will follow the pathway for EV charger installations by an electrical professional.

The list of documents needed for the application process are:

Charger invoice showing proof of payment
Installation invoice (proof of payment and itemized costs broken down by work performed)
Electrical permit number
Picture of the installed EV charging station and power management device.

Once you have this in hand, you’ll want to navigate to this website link.

You can verify your documents with what’s listed there, or scroll to the bottom to check off “I have the required documents ready to upload” and click on “Start Application”.

Completing the Application

An important note about the application: There is no save button and refreshing the page might mean restarting at Step 1, which is why having all the required documents on hand prior to completing the application is recommended.

Step 1 of the application requires you to provide some personal information including:

Your electricity provider
Your account number (image below)
First and last name
Contact number and email address

And finally, whether you would like to be contacted about future energy management programs.

BC Hydro provides the following information in order to find your account number

Step 2 is for a description of the property and requires:

Type of residence
Whether you upgraded your home’s electrical service
Whether the residence was built more than six months prior to the charger installation
The property address.

Note! The electrical service upgrade should be marked “no” if you are using a power management device such as the DCC by RVE. Some power management devices, a charge controller like the DCC specifically, is designed to avoid needing to complete an electrical service upgrade.

Step 3 involves listing details about the products used in the charging installation project.You’ll need to identify:

The brand of charging station used (ex. Flo)
The specific model of charging station (ex. Flo model FH-1-STA-G5-HY5G-FL1) that is listed on your charging station purchase receipt
The date of installation
The invoice number for the charging station purchase and work completed
The cost of the charger and the cost of the installation, respectively
Invoices for the charger used and the EV Power Management Device used (in jpeg, jpg, pdf, doc, or xls format).

Note! Receipts and invoices need to include an itemized list of purchases, the name and/or website of the retailer, the retailer’s address and phone number, the purchase date and price, and the brand name and model.

After uploading the proof of purchase for the charging station and power management devices, you’ll be asked for some additional information pertaining to the qualifications of the person responsible for the installation project. In the case of an electrical contractor, you will need:

The contractor’s first and last name
Their phone number and email
The electrical permit number for the charging installation project
The installation invoice which shows proof of payment to the licensed electrician, a picture of the installed station, and a picture of the installed EV power management device (in jpeg, jpg, pdf, doc, or xls format). Refer to image for details.

In Step 4 you’ll be asked to review all of the submitted information and documents and most importantly, whether you would like to receive the rebate on a utility bill or by email money transfer. Email money transfers require some additional information indicated in the image here.

A possible $800 in savings towards your EV charging installation!

BC Hydro reimburses 50% of the cost of an eligible Level 2 EV charger (to a maximum of $350) and up to an additional $250 for single-family home customers who install an eligible smart EV charger, as long as funding remains available.
